FOOD SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: THE AMERICAN GRILLED CHEESE KITCHEN IN SAN FRANCISCO
There’s nothing quite as comforting or nostalgic as biting into a grilled cheese sandwich. That combination of toasted, crunchy bread and gooey, cheesy center is like being a kid all over again. For many of us, the simple pleasure of a grilled cheese sandwich was a treat we bid farewell upon adopting a gluten-free diet. Thankfully, there are restaurants like The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen who want all of their customers to relive their favorite childhood meal, even when avoiding gluten*. Better yet, they've chosen Bread SRSLY to be their GF bread of choice. Our Pullman loaves, or extra large versions of our Classic sourdough loaf, are what restaurants like The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen use to make their delicious gluten-free sandwiches and toasts.
As a Food & Wine winner of the “Best Grilled Cheese in the US,” the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen team ‘aims to cheese’ your taste buds and satisfy your appetite. Husband and wife owners, Nate and Heidi, had just won their 7th National Grilled Cheese Championship when they decided to cash in their savings and open the restaurant with one mission: “get a smile through the magic of grilled cheese.”
After tasting their gluten-free grilled cheese sandwich on Bread SRSLY at the South Park location, we were nothing but smiles! Their GF sandwich option*, The Mousetrap, is filled with Monterey Jack, creamy Havarti and Tillamook Cheddar—with available toppings such as avocado, applewood bacon, caramelized onions, pickles and more! We topped ours with spicy arugula and fresh tomato, a perfect pairing to compliment the decadent layers of cheese. Another great tip: their breakfast options can all be made using Bread SRSLY as well.
During our visit, the manager at the South Park location let us know that aside from the gluten-free sandwich option, they also have several salads and side dishes that can be enjoyed for those avoiding gluten. We opted for Vlad’s Mediterranean Quinoa Salad—a huge bowl of arugula, tri-colored quinoa, cucumbers, red bell peppers, pickled red onion, feta cheese, and cherry tomatoes tossed in a bright and creamy champagne vinaigrette. To say we left satisfied and smiling is an understatement.
