Hot Honey Sweet Onion Flatbread

Use A Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread

We're using Bread SRLY's gluten-free sourdough bread for this recipe because we can slice it right down the middle, rather than having pre-sliced sandwich bread. Sourdough adds tang which adds to the overall flavor profile, but a store-bought yeasted bread works fine.

If you don't have Bread SRSLY on hand, use your favorite sourdough bread and toast on the pan in similar fashion. Whether or not you are gluten-free, these are great bread types to use:

  • Ciabatta
  • Focaccia
  • Sourdough boule (thickly sliced lengthwise)
  • Baguette

How to Make Pizza Flatbread on Bread

Using a bread is a much easier way to make a flatbread. Rather than kneading, rolling, and baking dough, you can toast bread on the stove or grill.

Once you have your bread, follow these simple steps.

  1. Slice bread lengthwise.
  2. Preheat a cast iron, carbon steel, or stainless steel pan or griddle on medium and add butter. You'll want the pan to fit the entire bread.
  3. Toast until golden brown.
  4. Add prosciutto to the buttered toasted bread, then sliced burrata, snap peas (you can toast these in the oven for extra flavor), fresh basil leaves, and a generous drizzle of hot honey and olive oil to add delicious fatty flavor.

Alternative to Pan Toasting

If you don't have a large enough pan for your bread, you can toast it in the oven following these steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400–425°F
  2. Melt the butter and brush it generously over both sides of the bread
  3. Place it directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet
  4. Toast for 5–7 minutes, then flip and toast another 3–5 minutes until golden brown

Topping Additions & Substitutions

  • Swap burrata for ricotta, another creamy cheese
  • Swap prosciutto for ham, speck, or coppa.
  • Swap basil for arugula, which isn't an herb, but adds nice bitterness.
  • Swap hot honey for regular honey or balsamic glaze, which is similarly sweet with a vinegary tang.
  • Add caramelized onions on the bread before the prosciutto.
  • Add capers on the burrata for more saltiness.
