This recipe is a delicious way to incorporate fruit into french toast. Apple Cinnamon French Toast tastes like fall yet feels fresh for any season, and very ingredient has a strong role in creating decadent flavor.
We are making this french toast both gluten and dairy free. But no worries - with this recipe, you wouldn't know the difference!
Making French Toast Dairy-Free
Making french toast dairy-free is incredibly easy. The only thing you'll need is:
- A dairy-free milk, like oat, soy, or almond. Soy and oat milk are the most creamy.
- A butter alternative. A coconut oil goes perfectly with this because it is a saturated fat with a complementary flavor to the apples.
Making French Toast Gluten-Free
Making french toast gluten-free is easy too, but it's important to find a high-quality gluten-free bread with good flavor. In this recipe, we use Bread SRSLY's gluten-free sourdough, a tangy, soft, and perfect loaf for french toast.
Gluten-free french toast is best once you stale the bread for a few hours then let it soak long in the egg mixture, but this recipe works totally fine without that method. The flavor and texture of the bread doesn't need much doctoring up. But if you do have a less flavorful bread, the stale-then-soak method will probably be better.
Creating Decadent Cinnamon Apple Flavor
How can you create a strong cinnamon apple flavor in your french toast? Apples and cinnamon are an obvious answer, but the following help enhance the cozy flavors:
- Coconut oil has a subtle sweetness and richness that complements cinnamon and apple beautifully. Plus, its high smoke point helps when cooking.
- Lemon zest and juice brings out the apple. Not only that, but lemon prevents oxidation in the apples, keeping them from turning brown. Lemon is used in apple pie and applesauce recipes for these reasons!
- Nutmeg is a complement of cinnamon. It has a nutty flavor that turns any french toast recipe into something deeper. It's a strong spice though, so go easy with it!
- Maple syrup. Apple cinnamon would be lost without a rich, caramel partner. We add maple syrup to both the stewed apples and the egg mixture, rather than using a neutral sweetener. Besides, maple syrup doesn't require sugar dissolution, making this recipe easier for the chef.
